It’s been so gloomy and rainy but with beautiful moments of sun. So when I got dressed this morning to come in and see Kate at Advokate, I put on my bright contrasting colors over one of my batik tank tops to show that I still have a colorful spirit inside, even though it’s buried under my usual green/gray/brown ensembles as I go out to care for my two horses.
The horses still haven’t finished shedding and have been rolling in mud and when I get a dry moment I get out and curry them and their coats brighten significantly after that. Star loves to roll in the mud and when she can find a dry patch of grass she can actually rub more of her coat off and she can look quite shiny. I did get her brushed and sprayed to try and protect her from flies and ticks, as well as Molly. But Molly has white on her and the mud shows up quite a lot when she rolls in the mud!
We had a great walk in the woods the other day when my friend Monika showed up back at home from her trip to visit her new grandson, Miles, named for her as she puts in many miles of walking.

The horses were frisky and Star was a real handful out in the woods. The explanation for her energy is that they used to be able to visit the big field next to the house and run and nibble on the dry dead grasses and have a good time but now it needs to be left alone so that hay can grow and it will be harvested as beautiful feed. So they have their small pastures that they can still nibble on grass but not the big running spaces.
Monika and I walked up into the woods with the hemlock trees with Molly and Star and it was so peaceful and refreshing to be up there on a day without sun, but still — the sounds, the smells, the softness of the woodland earth under all of our feet was so rejuvenating.
And here I am today as the blossoms are coming out around our house and I dressed in bright colors to celebrate the way I do feel in spring. Spring was like a euphoria when I was on the farm and everything would change and become new and blossoms would be everywhere — but mostly the fresh gorgeous grasses and clovers out in the field brought so much happiness, not just to myself and Dick, but to the cows as well.
I am really hoping to get to do some batik this spring soon!
