The early March mornings have been exceptionally cold, zero to minus ten degrees. Yet the sun is with us earlier and later and much stronger. All looks dormant and yet below the ground, new spring life is stirring.

Sap buckets and sap lines are being found through the woodlands, ready to collect the sap from maple trees to make our country maple syrup. All is getting ready for the rising spring growth which begins at the roots.

I have practiced Tai Chi for 14 years and the first benefit I received from it was to feel and connect with the earth. Before that, I had no roots of my own. In the warm months I love to walk up the high fields to practice and look out over the expansive countryside. As I practice Tai Chi and the gentle grounding circular form I become a part of the earth, mountains, air and feel the interconnection of all things.

This has led me to the below ground aspect in my artwork, and here are some examples of my below ground silk paintings and batik.
